Lipid determinations:

If your doctor orders a lipid profile (triglycerides, total cholesterol and high and low density cholesterol [HDL and LDL]) please come to the Clinical Laboratory in the morning, after 12-14 hours of fasting. Do not drink any alcoholic beverage during the 24 hours before taking the sample.

Prolactin:

Please come to the laboratory 2 hours after getting up from bed. No fasting is required.

Urinalysis:

It is better to use the first urine of the morning but, if needed, the sample can be taken at any time. Please follow the steps below in order to prevent your urine sample from becoming contaminated:

Wash your external genitalia with water and soap.

Then dry (for women, separate the labia majora).  Let the first and last part of the urine run.

Collect the intermediate part of the urine in the sample flask provided by the Clinical Laboratory (or in any urinalysis bottle with tight cap closure).

Once you have collected the urine, deliver it immediately or within the hour at the Clinical Laboratory.

Urine culture:

The best thing is to collect the first urine of the morning but, if needed, you can collect the sample at any time. The laboratory will provide you with a sterile container. Please make sure you follow these steps for hygiene:

Men: Wash the genital area gently with abundant water and soap. Collect the urine sample in the container provided by the Clinical Laboratory, letting the first part of the urine run down the drain and collecting the sample from the intermediate micturition.

Women: Wash the genital area gently with abundant water and soap. Open the labia majora of the external genitalia with your left index and middle fingers. Let a few cubic centimeters of urine flow and then collect the rest directly in the sterile container.

Babies under 2 years of age:  Wash the genital area gently with abundant water and soap. Dry and place the bag around the penis in boys and in girls over the entire labia majora, with the adhesive touching the skin, making sure it fits tightly at the back to avoid leakage.

Glucose tolerance test:

You must arrive early in the morning (7:00 a 9:00 a.m.) at the laboratory, after an 8-hour period of fasting.

Please remain seated without walking or exercising during the time of the test.

If you feel any discomfort such as dizziness, headache or other, please report it immediately to the laboratory technician.

Do not eat or drink anything during the time of the test. If you need to drink some water, please remember to do so before starting the test.

Please abstain from smoking until the test is completed.

Deoxypyridinoline (D-Pyrilinks):

Collect a urine sample after 2 hours of retention, preferably the second micturition before 10 a.m., in order to avoid the effect of biological variation.

Fungal culture:

Do not apply any topical medication on the area 8 to 10 days before taking the sample.
